Ban for Birmingham buskers who only knew Wonderwall and Faith

Aug. 20, 2009 - A ‘busking duo from hell’ who turned Moseley into anything but an oasis with their renditions of just two songs have been turfed out of the area.

Andrew Stevens and James Ryan

Guitar-strumming James Ryan and pal Andrew Stevens, who would bash dustbin lids and street furniture with drumsticks, only knew two hits - Wonderwall by Oasis and George Michael’s Faith.

But the plug has now been pulled on their impromptu gigs after fed-up residents, plagued by their late night begging antics, said it turned Moseley village into a nightmare of loud noise and fighting.

Now 40-year-old Ryan, from Dollery Drive, Edgbaston, and Stevens, also known as Andrew Cave, 39, of no fixed address, have been banned from entering parts of Moseley and playing musical instruments in public in the area.

The pair were also banned from begging anywhere in England and Wales.

They were warned they faced jail if they breached the two-year anti-social behaviour orders handed down yesterday by District Judge Qureshi at Birmingham Magistrates Court.

After the hearing, Ryan said: “The whole thing’s about playing a guitar, it’s a joke. Most people loved it.”

Birmingham City Council said the pair stood outside various pubs in Moseley singing and begging, often playing from early evening into the early hours.

The pair also waited outside taxi ranks and cashpoints along St Mary’s Row demanding money.

Revellers often joined in with them at pub closing time. As well as the excessive noise nuisance fights would often break out between groups heading home, the council said.

studio city

jeesh!
we haven't checked in with the blog in a while...

how are you ?

we were gone forever it seemed like!

the tour with Casiotone was awesome -
we played at What the Heck Fest in Anacortes WA, saw lots of really great bands, put on another production of Nick Krgovich's musical "In the Yard, Havin' Fun" (this time I got to play Nedelle's love interest!), got funny looking sunburns.

right now, Nedelle and I are back in California, relaxing and reorienting at my parents' place in LA. I wish we had some pictures to post up here from the tour for you - we saw lots of good things - but the camera got left behind...
maybe there'll be photos later ?

for now we're just laying low, making up some new music, going swimming.

we have more touring planned in the fall and winter
but Mike won't be joining us -
Nedelle, Aaron and I have all decided to move to LA, unfortunately Mike has not.
he loves living in Berkeley, or rather, would not love living in LA. which we understand.
but we're going to miss him!

more soon,
Chris

New 7" on Slowboy

We're starting a U.S. tour tomorrow with a new 7" in tow. You can't tell by this picture, but they're hand-printed silver and white, OR silver and black. Clear vinyl.
Our tourdates are in an earlier post- they're mostly with Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, which we're very excited about!
See you soon!

the 7" is also available at:

a note from the backseat

it's overcast. i'm hungover. yesterday we got detoured for 2 hours because of a d-day anniversary parade. 65th anniversary- is that a round enough number for such balleyhoo? these french tolls are verging on piracy! i keep taking off and on my sweathshirt like a maniac. feeling a bit feverish, a bit panicked. this constant movement, let me tell you...
one time my brother said, "i wonder if your brain will develop a certain way over time in which you can only equate progress with traveling.." (he's a neuroscientist btw) i hope this isn't true!
i wonder if we'll get slight brain damage from too much car time. our brains just jiggling around in their jelly encasements. i should ask sam...
i've developed a ridiculous new obsession- filing my nails to symmetrical perfection, so my right and left hands are exactly the same. i feel guilty (well, almost) about having all this free time. time to do anything that could possibly be done in a car. what next???

PS- my friend amy and i made a little video for the 'teen vogue' blog that got posted a couple days ago- it's about vintage stores in the bay area.
